Materials of genuine quality would not get contaminated or eroded easily.
Just like that people of sterling character would not get affected seriously by the company they keep..
I am talking of people of real quality. And such people are indeed rare.. The general idea that a man can be measured by the company he keeps would apply to the majority. and we are the majority..

The subhashitam quoted above deals with exceptionally great and noble people.

The meaning is --
The noble and virtuous people do not veer towards evil tendencies even if they are in the company of people with evil propensities. A venomous serpent may coil around the trunk of a sandalwood tree. But the Sandal extract would never get poisonous.

Analysis
साधवः noble souls
सङ्गदोषेण because of bad or evil association, company
विकृतिं tendency to do wrong things,
न गच्छन्ति एव indeed do not attain, do not proceed to
महासर्पैः by enormously venomous snakes

A tiny shining fish, innocent and poor, was caught by a rowing fisherman. The fish slipped out of his tough hand but was caught in the fishermans net. It wriggled out of the maze of the net perhaps by the force of temporary luck, but then strightaway fell into the mouth of a stork eagerly waiting, and was gobbled up by the bird. Tell me, if your fate Is crooked, how on earth can you find any success in any of your avowed projects ?

A person of class, dignity and boldness loves to enjoy the pleasures of life in the company of his beloved friends, kinsmen and attendants. However, if he has to face a difficult situation or to accomplish a complicated task involving great danger, he would go about execution of the task all alone and would accomplish it without causing detriment to the people around him. Lord Shiva was present when the Devas and Asuras churned the Milky ocean. The serpent Vasuki spewed out the deadly venom Kalakoota under pressure and that poison would have destroyed all the gods and demons around. Sensing the danger, Lord Shiva the annihilator of the three cities Tripura, took the poison in his hands and swallowed it, restricting the effects of the poison to himself alone. The Lord survived and his neck became blue, that is another story. But all othes were saved. That is more important.
Later, ambrosia, or Amrutham came out of the milky ocean as a result of churning. This time the Lord Shiva did not drink amrutham all alone but he drank the ambrosia sharing the potion along with all the Gods. When there are positive results, great men share the success with all people around.

A person who tells lies, who does not desists from speaking untruth, is similar to a fellow who has consumed the deadly venom Kalakoota. In this world, he will never get any friendsip, he would not acquire any divine merit, he will never get praise and fame in his lifetime, and in general he will not be visited with welfare and peace in life.

(A great subhaashitam indeed, it is. It must have been true some time ago. However it would seem the statement itself is a great lie in the present society. The hallmark of successful leaders in the society of today are the capacity to tell something and act in a diametrically opposite manner, not thinking of being honest even in dreams, and the consummate skill in presenting lies as gospel truths. Of course, Mahatma Gandhi loved this couplet, it is said)

tusk of elephant vs neck of tortoise

The word of great man is like the tusk of an elephant. Once it has grown out, it will be there for ever. The word of an evil-minded ruffian is like the neck of a tortoise. It comes out for some time and then it is drawn back into the shell.

The idea of the slokam is that great and noble souls would never go back on what they have spoken. It is just like the tusk of an elephant. Once the tusk grows and is outside the mouth of the elephant, it cannot be taken back and concealed in the mouth again.
However, the lowly pretenders dish out any promise or assurance just to suit the moment. However they will simply deny those words and go back on their promises if they are in a situation where they have to keep their words. Just like the tortoise sticking out it head out of its shell and drawing it back if things are not safe, the evil-minded liars just swallow back what they had already spoken

innocent and noble people work hard throughout their life and others take advantage

yadamī daśanā daśati rasanā tatsvādamanubhavati |
prakṛtiriyaṁ vimalānāṁ kliśyanti yadanyakāryeṣu||
subhāṣitaratnabhāṇḍāgāre||

Another very nice reminder.. Worth pondering..
========
meaning
------------
These teeth bite chew and toil hard with food, but it is the tongue that enjoys the taste.
Indeed, the innocent and noble people work hard throughout their life.. that is their inherent nature..
And that hard work is for the benefit of others..
==========

It is so plain..
The labourer works hard, not exactly for himself..
He is not even rewarded partially..
But the fruits of such labour go to nourish others, many of them very lazy and pleasure loving..
(from this idea was born socialism and communism)
However, if the persons who do real work slacken their verve, the suffering too comes for others..
Yes, the real purpose of life seems to live for all, live without much expectation, and be happy that such life adds some worth to others..
Maybe some reward might come in the long run..
But the greatest reward is the happiness one can see in others.
There is another saying about the relation between the tongue and the teeth.. This relates to the tendency of the tongue to wag itself with dirty words.. And when it comes to punishment the beating is taken by the teeth..

अमी these दशना teeth दशति bite and chew with a lot of labour तद् that स्वादं taste of the foodstuff रसना the tongu अनुभवति enjoys इयं this is the विमलानां of innocent and noble people प्रकृतिः nature ते they अन्यकार्येषु for the benefit of others क्लिश्यन्ति face a lot of labour, face a lot of toil

Tell me, if your fate Is crooked, how on earth can you find any success in any of your avowed projects ?

selfishness

kāka āhvayate kākān yācako na tu yācakān|
kākayācakayormadhye varaḥ kāko na yācakaḥ||
subhāṣitaratnabhaṇḍāgāre||

This is a nice quote from the great reservoir of Subhashitams called Subhashitaratnabhadagaram- figuratively and literally meaning the treasure house of great sayings. If one starts quoting from that ocean, one would easily spend his whole time without repetition.
The meaning of the Slokam
==========
The crow, when it discovers food, just cries aloud and enthusiastically calls all its clan to join him. However, a beggar (who is a man too) would never do that.( He would rather try to grab the entire thing).That is the difference. The crows are far better than beggars are.
================
This simple analogy reiterates the utterly selfish nature of humankind.
The crows are so spontaneous.
They are happy to find nice things, and they are eager to share too.
Most of the beings on the surface of earth too are like that.
Even if they kill, they would do that for survival or in self-defence.
However, even if he has more than the reasonable needs and expectations, the man who is supposed to possess the sixth sense, is selfish.
He would love to grab, hoard, and he would rather find pleasure in ensuring that his own species do not get, their share.
We are not likely to find any selfish crow anywhere.
Perhaps once in a million, we might find a person who is not selfish.
The slokam talks of beggars as being selfish. Nevertheless, in reality most human beings, be it beggars or kings, mendicants or monarchs, are all selfish.

the tongue enjoys the taste while the teeth toil hard

yadamī daśanā daśati rasanā tatvādamanusarati|
prakṛtiriyaṁ vimalānāṁ kliśyanti yadanyakāryeṣu||
subhāṣitaratnabhāṇḍāgāre||
Another very nice reminder, worth pondering..
========
Meaning
------------
These teeth bite chew and toil hard with food, but the tongue enjoys the taste.
Indeed, the innocent and noble people work hard throughout their life. That is their inherent nature.
And that hard work gives advantage only for others.
==========
It is so plain and apparent.
The labourer works hard, not exactly for himself.
He does not receive the rewards even partially.
However, the fruits of such labour go to nourish others, many of them very lazy and pleasure loving.
(Perhaps, it is from this line of thinking that ideologies like socialism and communism originated.)
However, if the persons who undertake the real toil slacken their verve, the suffering would visit the others too.
Yes, the real purpose of life seems to be that people should live and work for the benefit of all, should live without much selfish expectations, and must feel happy that such life adds some worth in the lives of others too.
Maybe some reward might come in the end.
However, the greatest reward is the happiness one can see in others.
There is another saying about the relation between the tongue and the teeth. This relates to the tendency of the tongue to wag itself incessantly using dirty words. When it comes to punishment, it is for the teeth to receive thrashes .
Regards and wishes for a nice day ahead

A very matter of fact subhashitam from the treasury of great sayings in Sanskrit..
The company of people with the following qualities should be cultivated,, even if such people are not having any money or status
1. Those who are prepared to tolerate and understand
2. Those who are honest and straightforward
3. Those who would stick on to the promises given by them.. both in words and in spirit
4. Those who are basically inclined to help others
The subhashitam is too straightforward.. We know the contents instinctively.. But most often we cultivate only the rich and influential.. that is human nature..

subhāṣitaratnabhāṇḍāgāre
If one discovers that a person with whom he has to associate with is
unfriendly, repulsive and basically without love, affection or such warm emotions, then the best choice available for him is just to avoid him and jettison him as if he were junk or useless material, even if such person is one’s own uterine brother or blood-relation. And if this is the case with a brother, one need not have second thoughts about discarding such a fellow if he is not closely connected at all.

if the earth eats up all the vegetables growing on it....

If the earth starts eating plants and vegetable and all the nourishment they produce and contain
If the mother who gave birth has no hesitation to kill her own son
If the sea whose tides are precisely timed according to the phases of the moon just deviate from the schedule
If the fire just burns the earth into ashes
And
If the King whose bounden duty to protect the rights and the very existence of his sujects does injustice to them
Then who can prevent the perpetrators of the irregularity and protect the victim.
The fundamental laws should never be transgressed.

icchādānaparopakārakaraṇaṁ pātrānurūpaṁ phalam||
Desires, gifts, help rendered .. these three yield result entirely based on the target
If one’s desires are lofty, he would get matching benefits. If his desires are ulterior, he would be led to ruin
If one makes gifts to a noble person or a noble cause, such gifts would yield happiness and welfare. If the gifts are made to an undeserving person or for an undesirable cause, the results would be destruction and chaos
If one helps a good person or a good cause there to results would be for the good of all. If lone helps someone with destructive intent, obviously he is adding to disorder and misery

There will be many Gods, but they will have no qualities and powers that are expected in gods
The so called sages and saints are past-maters in deception
The common people tell lies and falsehoods as a matter of habit
Clouds gather in the sky with great intensity but they pour no water
Evil people flock together very eagerly to perpetrate all the damages they could manage
The rulers of the various localities on the face of earth all veer towards evil thoughts and actions
The people are either fallen or are already lost
The age of Kali, Kaliyuga is at its peak
These are the predictions for Kaliyuga..
Perhaps it would seem we have reached the destination.

Extending goodwill and hospitality to evil ruffians is a wasteful activity. Often it count be counterproductive too. This fact is illustrated in this ancient piece of wisdom from Subhashitaratnabhandagaram

A person who tries to make measurements and peform agricultural operations like ploughing in the empty open sky, A person who is dutifully engaged in drawing pictures on the surface of water, A person who hopes to purify the flowing wind by throwing water at it.. All these are sailing the same boat with the one who is keen to extend hospitality, who does a good turn to an evil minded fellow.

The three activities stated above would simply drain off the energy and resources of the person who attempts these. Helping an evil minded fellow too is the same. Maybe the evil fellow would hit back too.

=========
Like a rowdy elephant at the peak of its rut, the mind runs all around pointlessly..
That mind is to be kept in control by using the goad in the form of knowledge..
===============
Human mind seems to be crafted originally to react to situations impulsively and without much discretion..
Maybe that attitude has remained in us because
Fight or flight are the safest two modes for escape, safety or preservation in the primitive life.
But human thought and social environment has progressed and reached great heights of understanding, tolerance, empathy, mutual affection, and so on, even though the basic foundation of anxiety and resistance even without reasonable cause is always there..

We have acquired knowledge, and we have realized that there are better methods of existence that fighting with one another..

But such ideas would arise in our minds only if the initial base tendencies are kept in check or just put down with force..

It is like controlling a wild elephant with a goad..

The animal instincts and tendencies are very strong in us

And the method to control such tendencies is just using sharp and effective weapons..-- here the weapon of knowledge and discretion.
