richest fellow who will not help others is merely a wretch

Very rich people, people who have a lot of money and resources under their control, can be considered only in the category of very poor and indigent ones if they have no mind to share with others through gifts what they possess. The sea which is full of water is no better than the driest desert for us because the salty water filling the sea will never help us in quenching our thirst.
From bhojaprabandham

A kingdom or region headed by a king or by a leader who lacks sense and discretion
Where the ministers and officials of the State turn away their head when they meet people of class and nobilitiy
Where the wicked and the crafty ruffians are highly influential in the matter of the state and the society
Can any person with knowledge, wisdom and sense even get any opportunity to live, make progress and thrive ?
A quote from the Bhoja Prabhandham of Ballaaladeva.
However if one is tempted to look around himself after reading this we cannot find fault with him.

The glorious rise or sudden fall in fame happens to great warriors in wars and great poets in the exalted assemblies in a matter of minutes. The warriors jump into the battle in all vigour and valour and fight to win or perish within minutes. Similarly, a poet presents his literary creation in the exalted assembly of great men, and if the work is great, he gets immediate approbation and if the work is of low standard, he would be rejected within the shortest time too.

The lustre, beauty and glory provided by a royal swan swimming in all its beauty in a pond is more than that would be provided by a group of thousand storks and cranes populating the bankd of the pond.

From Bhojaprabhandham of Ballaaladeva

Dangers and threats, should be nipped in the bud

Dangers and threats, should be nipped in the bud.. The challenges arising may be very tiny.. The diseases or aberrations to health might appear in a very minor way..
But if we do not attend to such issues and find proper remedies as early as possible, the issues can grow into huge affairs and no rescue or remedy would be possible at that time..
Prevention is always better than cure..
This idea is underlined in the Sanskrit couplet found in the compilation Bhojaparabhandam of poet Bhallaala..
Meaning
------------
If a person does not take care to pacify or prevent or vanquish a disease or an enemy at the time when such disease or enmity is born.. or even a trace of them is appearing, then it is danger for him.
The petty maladies or the trifling enemies would grow with time and when they have grown considerably, they may turn against him and kill him..
------------
It is a simple fact.. Some attention is all that is needed.
But most often we overlook trifling issues.. we postpone attending to them to some future date.. and by that time the issue overtakes us..

Another gem from Sanskrit
================
One should never attempt to destroy or apply something in large quantity or of huge value for getting some small or cheap thing in return.
The test of one’s bountiful intelligence and efficiency lies in his capacity to procure, maintain and preserve a huge quantum of resources by applying as little as possible of what he is already in possession.
====================
Looks a very straightforward and even trifling statement deserving hardly any elucidation.
However, in real life, hype, advertisement, comparison, jealousy et al., mislead us and we pay through our noses.
Not only our resources, we often apply or spend our emotions like anger, generosity, love and so on too in huge excess of what is required optimally.
(Of course, we need not consider spending things to help others in this category because the return we get by way of happiness and goodwill such expenditure generates always is in excess of what we spend.)
Moreover, not to say the least, we spend our thoughts and words too in disproportionate way due to lack of diligence.
We can think and save.
Anything saved is anything earned too.

महतां for great personage क्रियासिद्धिः success, achievement in their avowed tasks सत्त्वे own inherent capacity, ability भवति happens उपकरणे implements, tools न not

For great and noble personages, positive achievement in their avowed tasks is entirely dependent on their own inherent efficiency and personal power.
They do not rely much on the tools and assistants.
We know that Sage Agastya was a very tiny human being. His body was very small and his physical strength was practically inconsequential. His place of birth was a pot made of mud. He lived among animals, having deer as his assistants. He dressed himself with the bark of a bhurja..or birch tree. He resided permanently in a forest. His staple food was the bulbous roots, tubers. However, on one occasion, he just drew the whole waters of the southern seas in the palm of his tiny hand held like a bud of lotus. And drank it too.

Sage Agastya did not have the benefits of high birth, strong body influential companions or any such normal advantages. All he possessed was the power of his intense penance and the strength of his indomitable will power. He proceeded to carry the ocean in his palm and consumed it. It is evident that it was his own power that sustained him.

My dear one, of all the sins to are the worst.. First, a king with bad, inept and evil-minded ministers.
Second, is serving or taking shelter under such a king..
Comments.
Even the best and the most noble people would become useless or even turn bad when they are surrounded by evil-minded ministers and advisers.
So it is the first sin.. that is for the King.. to have bad ministers.
Serving under and taking shelter on the magnanimity and efficiency of such a king is suicidal..
So it is the second sin.. that is for the subjects..

do not hoard, share...

mūrkho na hi dadātyarthaṁ naro dāridryaśaṅkayā|
prājñastu vitaratyarthaṁ naro dāridryaśaṅkayā||
balāladevasya bhojaprabandhe||

A worthy advice from Bhojaprabandham..

The foolish person just hoards all that he has because  he fears that he may face poverty later
The wise and the noble person distributes all that he has because he fears that he would face poverty later..

The attitude of the  foolish person is  very clear.. He is just thinking of his own personal safety in a shortsighted manner..
However, the wise and the noble  understands that the purpose of having wealth is just to share for the benefit of all.. Even if it is not spent like that,  the money will get spent.. So, if he does not distribute it when he is wealthy,  he would not have the opportunity to share when he faces poverty himself
Alternately,  when money is hoarded, or kept in some hands,  the others who are needy would try to grab such money by fair or foul means and ultimately,  when the money goes, the  hitherto rich man would become poor..  So  the better course would be to distribute and share what one has, because then the chances of being robbed or divested of everything  by others are less..

Anyway,  sharing is always a better policy that hoarding..

A very poignant quote from Ballaladeva's Bhojaprabhandham..

Do the noble men consider the lives of those who are living without
Knowledge
Valour
Dexterity in arts
Good family
Modesty,
Desire to make sacrifices
Capacity to apply the resources happily and usefully
as lives with purpose, lives worth living ?
Indeed such lives are of no use to the persons who live and also for others.

Of course the combination of all these virtues is very hard to find..
People with at least a few of the the qualities mentioned above can pass the muster..
And each quality is great in its own way..
And each of the above qualities can be applied in a bad way too..
But indeed a nice reminder..

There are many learned persons. who are not interested in the welfare of others
There are many kindhearted persons who do not have the adequate learning and skill enabliing them to be of service to others

But one rarely gets a person who is a friend deeply interested in his welfare and at the same time is having knowledge and skill too

It is simply like a medicine which is capable of healing our diseases and at the same time tasting nice too..

It is our experience that medicines which possess great curing capacity are often bitter to taste..

life is beyond mere body

A quote from the famous Bhojaprabhandam of poet Ballaala.

Our human bodies would fall down and die out sooner or later..
So why should one be too much obsessed with protecting this perishable body?

But the name and fame one has earned should be preserved and protected with great care realizing that they are permanent and long enduring

A human being, even if his physical body falls down in death and decay, lives eternally through the body formed by his good name and standing in society.. ..

There is always the need to expect the unexpected

||ballāladevasya bhojaprabandhāt||

An interesting situation cited in the celebrated Bhojaprabandham. It is very difficult to explain the inscrutable vagaries of fate.
"Rama is the master of the three worlds and the godhead Himself, and Sage Vaishta is the son of Brahmadeva. The said Vasishta fixed the auspicious time for the coronation of Rama.  But at the same muhoorta (auspicious time), Rama had to leave for forest and during Rama's sojourn in forest, the unhappy incident of abduction of Sita by Ravana happened.  So even the words of the son of  Brahma can go wrong"

This situation can be viewed from two angles.
Firstly,  A wise person may be embarking on a project after meticulous planning.  The implementation of the plan may entrusted to the most appropriate persons.  Still the plans may go haywire for no conceivable reason.  Vasishta is a great sage, and the son of Brahmadeva himself.  Brahmadeva is the creator of the three worlds, and the judgment of His son and the author of great Dharmasaastra should carry a lot of weight.  Vasishta fixed the time-slot for the coronation of Rama, and the latter is Himself the controller of the whole world. Still that coronation did not take place, and Rama went to forest and had his share of misery. So even the most well made plans could be visited with failure.

The second aspect is to consider whether fixing of auspicious time for any function is of much use.  One has to ponder as to whether the happenings in the world are in one's control.  Maybe the working of the world is programmed by a more powerful force.  Even if it happens that the son of Brahma himself has expected great things to happen at an appointed time, if the exalted will of the Master is otherwise, nothing can change the course of fate.

The idea should not be construed as supporting absolute fatalism..People who tend to place too much of faith in fate, somehow go slack in their planning. This attitude is unwelcome.  The only warning is that even foolproof planning need not result in complete success. There is always the need to expect the unexpected.

one has to be level-headed.

aphalāni durantāni samavyayaphalāni ca|
aśakyāni ca vastūni nārabheta vicakṣaṇaḥ||13
||ballāladevasya bhojaprabandhāt||

A very appropriate guide for planning one's path of success as given out in the bhojaprabhandam of Ballaladeva.

"A man with keen intelligence will never embark on a mission

(1) which is apparently doomed for failure even at the outset,
(2) which is likely to end in disaster,
(3) which will yield at the best only results just equal to the efforts put in or where the input would barely match the output
or (4)  which he knows he is not capable of accomplishing."

"Discretion is the better part of valour" goes the wise saying.  It is futile to spend one's time and energy in projects which are not likely to yield favourable results.

If keeping quiet is a better choice than purchasing disaster, the former course is to be preferred.
But what we see in our day to day scenario in life is action diametrically opposite to this idea.  Planners even at macro level set out targets which are never realistic and politicians are adepts in laying foundation stones for projects which are never implemented.
Usually we are carried away by the initial euphoria and the hype.
One cardinal reason for such faulty approach is the lack of accountability. We just get carried away by our own words and the Goebbelian paradigm that a lie repeated too many times would be accepted by the masses as truth runs the roost.

This does not mean that one should start only things which are coming in packages with promise of cent percent success. The ways of the world always have some uncertainty.
But handing out impossible promises or going ahead even when one smells disaster right from the start are not the ways to be chosen by a wise person.

However  this should  not put an embargo on positive dreams.

It is all in the attitude

It is all in the attitude

The difference in sense of gratitude as exhibited by the noble person and the selfish one is described here by Ballaladeva in Bhojaprabandam.

"A man of noble character considers even a small favour like removing a dried grass from his hair, done by another person as if it were a service amounting to a gracious gift of millions of gold coins.
However, a selfish and evilminded fellow brooks enmity even with a person who has given up his own life in the service of the former."

It is indeed very graceful to see some persons expressing their gratitude even for very ordinary favours, and even action by others which are not really favours at all.
We can see gentlemen saying "thank you" for many things which are done only in the normal course of people's activities, that too after extracting the price for the thing or service rendered.

But we also meet people who never feel any sense of gratitude towards people go out of the way to make our lives much better..

We often take the services for granted.

See the policeman or the soldier who is on duty always ready to do anything including the supreme sacrifice with their own life for the society or the country in the performance of their duties..

How many people are thankful to them?

Rather, people are keen to curse the public servant even for the small errors that may occur in the course of their heavy and hectic work schedule.

It is all in the attitude of men.

We have to realize that no service can ever be compensated adequately with cash payments.

Here the poet Ballaladeva is paying respects in awe to the Divine will which creates so many miracles.
"The ocean turns into landscape and the land is turned into ocean in an infinitely small timespan by Him.A tiny speck of  dust is converted to mountain by Him and likewise  the   Meru mountain turns to dust.  A small piece of grass suddenly takes the shape of Vajrayudha or the weapon of thunderbolt, and the great weapon may not have the power of even a piece of grass if He wills so.   Smouldering fire may turn cool when He deems it fit and  the coolest snow may burn the world if He changes his mind.. The basic character of the Divine being appears to make things happen by his playful will  and my humble prostrations to that Great Force."

The basic character of objects remain so only when the great Lawgiver that is God wills it to be so.  We see sudden and explosive variations in nature which turns the entire universe topsy- turvy.  Think of the Tsunamis and cyclones, the wildfires and earthquakes.. We humans tend to be in a mood of complacency that everything in nature is under our control.  It is not so.  A twitch of the eyebrow of the Master can change everything beyond recognition.

An introspection by the celebrated poet and wirter Ballaladeve of Varanasi, who lived in India in the 16-17th centurry AD when Akabar and Shajahan were in throne
In the course recording of the celebrated Bhojaraja, the poet exclaims with a tinge of sadness at the way fate takes people to untold misery.  Here he takes the example of the elegant moon, who has to undergo waxing and waning every fortnight.  He says.."  The moon has for its siblings, the goddess of wealth Lakshmi, the great gem Kaustubham adorning the neck of Narayanan and the Kalpvirksha which fulfils the desires of all the people (these three emanated from the milky ambrosical ocean when it was churned by devas and asuras to obtaine the elixir for eternal life, amrutham.).  Moreover his father is the milky ocean which is the storehouse of all the great treasures in the universe.  Not to be stopped with it, Lord Shambu, developed great fancy for the moon and with love he adorned his head with the lunar crescent. In spite of all these advantages, the moon has to undergo the loss of his lustre for fifteen days and then grow into full lustre in another fifteen day, and to continue this cycle eternally.  It is so oradained by fate. Even the greatest advantages and high connections cannot prevent this. The edict of the fate is recorded  as if with very sharp instrument on the hardest surface of a stone and it is not erasable.  The vagaries of fate have to be suffered by all.

We may make loud talks about our own capacity to create and turn the course of events to the best of our advantage.  The subject of management is full of pep talks and encouraging words on this.  But the theories will work only if the circumstances, which may be called as fate also, work in our favour.  One can decorate a person only when he is alive. The talent for decoration may be in our hands but the life of the person being decorated in in the hands of the fate.  The only factor which has turned the course of human existence ultimately was quirky change of contemporary circumstances, which we call fate.  Fate is very strong..May be people turn to God and prayer because they are afraid of the unpredictability of fate.

broken fences, even though mended will never have the original looks or strength.

An interesting statement from Bhallaladeva of Varanasi, who wrote the history of King Bhoja, in his celebrated Bhojaprabandam.
" When one comes to know that he has contacted enmity with someone or that he has symptoms of a disease, he should destroy the enemy at that moment itself and take treatment and raze away all the symptoms of the disease without the slightest delay.  Even if the man is healthy and very strong, if the enemy or  the disease is given time to strengthen themselves,  later on they will defeat and destroy the person.

Prevention is better than cure, they say.  But in our life of conflicts we cannot help acquiring either enemies or diseases.  But once we know that a fellow is an enemy, it is meaningless to show kindness to him and tolerate him.. Friendships are easily broken, but when an enmity arises, it persists for ever.
Some people may remain inactive for some time' but broken fences, even though mended will never have the original looks or strength.

Many diseases attack the body in a small way.. We leave it as  "it is just a cold", "it is just a fever"  or "it is just a boil"  and neglect them.  But later on the same maladies can convert themselves to pneumonia, tuberculosis or a malignant growth.   So eternal vigil against enemies and disease  alone can keep us afloat.

Another quote from Bhojaprabhanadam..
about the worst situations in life   that can arise   to anyone..

situation that could thoroughly and completely upset their very existence  --
are enumerated here

The most humiliating situations  which could verily be like the fall of the blade of a sharp axe cutting into the primary roots of one's life are:-

1.  For one who is used to a   comfortable existence  in life, service under a boss who is a real taskmaster.

2. For the accumulated wealth of a person, tendency to spend money on evil things like gambling, hooch and other immoral activities.

3. For a person with self-respect, when  he faces a situation where he has to beg or crib for something.
4. For a set of law-abiding citizens , the existence of a cruel  and despotic monarch.

5. For a reputed and respectable family,  the activities of a son who has lost his character.

A boss who is a taskmaster can be the cause of anxiety and sense of insecurity for any servant.
This does not mean that the boss can always  afford to be lenient.
Normally the employees never obey a kind boss...it is the dharma of Kaliyuga.  Only the cracking of the whip could do the trick .
But there should be sufficient good sense on the part of the boss to understand that the situation  is not ever comfortable for one  who finds himself at the biting end of the whip.

Funny are the ways of riches..

People toil hard to earn, they apply fair means or foul in the process...but all the money can vanish into thin air if one is under the control of evil habits.

For an aristocrat, if he loses his wealth and  influence and is forced to a condition where he has to beg for something, it is worse than  death for him.

A bad king or his modern avatars can ruin a civil society or the nation as a whole.
We have seen many sons  right from  Duryodhana onward to the heirs apparent we encounter at   present who have ensured or are effectively overseeing  the downfall  of their family and clan through their own misdeeds.
