बन्धुरिव भवति पूर्वं मध्ये मित्रमिव शत्रुरिव चान्ते।
कृकलास इव दुरात्मा त्रीन् वर्णान् दर्शयति नीचः॥ ४७ ॥
नीति द्विषष्टिका
bandhuriva bhavati pūrvaṃ madhye mitramiva śatruriva cānte।
kṛkalāsa iva durātmā trīn varṇān darśayati nīcaḥ॥ 47 ॥
nīti dviṣaṣṭikā
A person with evil mind and lowly tendencies first try to cultivate our connection pretending that he is related to us. As long as it is advantageous to him, he continues to pose as a close friend. However, when he feels that there is nothing much to gain from us, he deliberately becomes our enemy. Thus he betrays and shows three different colours according to circumstances as if he were a chameleon or wild lizard.
पूर्वं first बन्धुः kin, relative इव like भवति becomes मध्ये in the middle, in due course मित्रं friends इव like वर्तते continues अन्ते in the end शत्रुः enemy इव like नीचः lowly person दुरात्मा person of evil mind and character कृकलास chameleon, wood lizard इव like त्रीन् three वर्णान् colours दर्शयति shows
ബന്ധുരിവ ഭവതി പൂർവം മധ്യേ മിത്രമിവ ശത്രുരിവ ചാന്തേ।
കൃകലാസ ഇവ ദുരാത്മാ ത്രീൻ വർണാൻ ദർശയതി നീചഃ॥ ൪൭ ॥
നീതി ദ്വിഷഷ്ടികാ
തരം താണ ദുഷ്ടനായ മനുഷ്യൻ ആദ്യം നമ്മുടെ ബന്ധുവാണെന്നു പറഞ്ഞു കൂടെ കൂടും. നമ്മെക്കൊണ്ട് പ്രയോജനവും ലാഭവും എല്ലാം ഉണ്ടെന്ന് അറിവുള്ള കാലം മുഴുവന് നമ്മുടെ ആത്മ സുഹൃത്ത് ആണെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞും അതുപോലെ പെരുമാറിയും കാലം കഴിക്കും. പക്ഷെ ഇനി നമ്മെക്കൊണ്ട് വലിയ ഉപയോഗം ഒന്നും ഇല്ലെന്നു കാണുകയോ തോന്നുകയോ ചെയ്താൽ അയാൾ കാരണമൊന്നും കൂടാതെ നമ്മുടെ ശത്രുവായി മാറും. ഇപ്രകാരം അയാൾ മരയോന്ത് ഇഷ്ടം പോലെ മൂന്ന് നിറങ്ങളിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നത് പോലെ സന്ദർഭം അനുസരിച്ച് നിറം മാറും.
