If you have the conviction that some charitable act you perform would really help others, that is nice.
Go ahead with that in full swing.
However, most often we participate in temple activities and contribute to temple festivals fully knowing that there is not much charity, punyam or philanthropy involved.
We just make the contributions because we have to exist in society and have to float in the group.
But if you can use your money and resources for purposes which would give you satisfaction with the realization of the fact that they get utilized in the right way, that is indeed great.
I for one do not believe in the charity involved in contributing money at all.
I am never much interested in either taking money nor giving it.
After all, money comes and goes not because of our inherent worth or merit.
However, if one has some special attainments that he or she can use for others without any trace of selfishness... that would be great in my humble opinion.
Of course, such opinions are subjective.
I agree, some individuals like us are not really great, but we are simply odd
