अङ्गेन गात्रं नयनेन वक्त्रं न्यायेन राज्यं लवणेन भोज्यम्।
धर्मेण हीनं खलु जीवितं च न राजते चन्द्रमसा विना निशा॥
aṅgena gātraṁ nayanena vaktraṁ nyāyena rājyaṁ lavaṇena bhojyam|
dharmeṇa hīnaṁ khalu jīvitaṁ ca na rājate candramasā vinā niśā||
This slokam is attributed to the philosopher poet Bhartruhari, the author of Neeti, Vairagya and Shringara Shatakas.
The meaning of the slokam is
The following things would not function at their peak glory and capacity and would lose their glory and sheen if they are bereft of the attributes which are distinctively identified with them. They would be lustreless and powerless, just like the night becoming pitch dark if the moon does not rise.
The body of a human being without properly functioning limbs would be not at its peak efficiency
The face of a human being if the eyes are not there would lose their peak functionality
The state or kingdom if equitable justice is not maintained would be in chaos
The food if appropriate quantity of salt is not added to it would hardly be tasty
And
Life itself, if there is no righteousness, if there is no proper code of conduct is in place would be meaningless
അംഗേന ഗാത്രം നയനേന വക്ത്രം ന്യായേന രാജ്യം ലവണേന ഭോജ്യം।
ധര്മേണ ഹീനം ഖലു ജീവിതം ച ന രാജതേ ചന്ദ്രമസാ വിനാ നിശാ॥
നീതിശതകം, വൈരാഗ്യശതകം ശൃംഗാരശതകം എന്ന ശതകത്രയത്തിന്റെ കര്ത്താവും അഭിവന്ദ്യനായ ദാര്ശനിക കവിയും ആയ ഭര്തൃഹരി രചിച്ച ഒരു ശ്ലോകം.
ശ്ലോകത്തിന്റെ അര്ത്ഥം
താഴെ പറയുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങള് അവയുടെ ചില ഒഴിച്ചു കൂടാനാവാത്ത ഘടകങ്ങള് ഉള്ളപ്പോള് മാത്രമേ തങ്ങളുടെ സ്വാഭാവികമായ മികവും കാര്യക്ഷമയും അവയുടെ പൂര്ണ്ണതയില് പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കുകയുള്ളൂ. അത്തരം നേട്ടങ്ങള് ഇല്ലാതായാല് ആ വസ്തുക്കളും അവയുടെ തിളക്കവും ഉല്കൃഷ്ടതയും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട നിലയിലേയ്ക്ക് താഴ്ന്നു പോകും. അവയുടെ അവസ്ഥ നിലാവ് ഉദിക്കാത്ത രാത്രി പോലെ ഏറെ തിളക്കം കുറഞ്ഞതായിരിക്കും.
ഒരു മനുഷ്യന്റെ ശരീരം അതിന്റെ എല്ലാ അവയവങ്ങളും ആരോഗ്യകരമായും തികഞ്ഞ കാര്യക്ഷമതയോടും പ്രവര്ത്തിച്ചില്ല എങ്കില് ശരീരത്തിന്റെ നിലനില്പ്പും പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുന്ന നിലയിലാവില്ല ഒരിക്കലും.
ഒരാള്ക്ക് കണ്ണുകളോ അവയുടെ പ്രവര്ത്തന ശേഷിയോ നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടാല് പിന്നെ അയാളുടെ മുഖം ഒരിക്കലും അതിന്റെ പൂര്ണ്ണതയില് ഉണ്ടാവും എന്ന് പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കാന് വയ്യ.
നീതിയും ന്യായവും നിലനില്ക്കാത്ത അവസ്ഥയില് ഒരു രാഷ്ടം മുന്നോട്ടു പോവുകയില്ല. അതിന്റെ അടിത്തറ തന്നെ ഇളകിപ്പോകും.
കണിശമായ അളവില് മാത്രം ഉപ്പ് ചേര്ത്തില്ല എങ്കില് ആഹാരത്തിനു ഒരു സ്വാദും ഉണ്ടാവുകയില്ല.
ഇതിനെല്ലാമുപരി
ജിവിതത്തില് ഉയര്ന്ന ധാര്മ്മികതയും തരമുള്ള പെരുമാറ്റവും വച്ചു പുലര്ത്തിയില്ല എങ്കില് ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ അര്ത്ഥം തന്നെ നഷ്ടപ്പെടും.
