दन्तिदन्तसमानं हि निःसृतं महतां वचः।
कूर्मग्रीवेव नीचानां पुनरायाति याति च॥
सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागारे॥
dantidantasamānaṃ hi niḥsṛtaṃ mahatāṃ vacaḥ।
kūrmagrīveva nīcānāṃ punarāyāti yāti ca॥
subhāṣitaratnabhāṇḍāgāre॥
The word of great man is like the tusk of an elephant. Once it has grown out, it will be there for ever. The word of an evil-minded ruffian is like the neck of a tortoise. It comes out for some time and then it is drawn back into the shell.
The idea of the slokam is that great and noble souls would never go back on what they have spoken. It is just like the tusk of an elephant. Once the tusk grows and is outside the mouth of the elephant, it cannot be taken back and concealed in the mouth again.
However, the lowly pretenders dish out any promise or assurance just to suit the moment. However they will simply deny those words and go back on their promises if they are in a situation where they have to keep their words. Just like the tortoise sticking out it head out of its shell and drawing it back if things are not safe, the evil-minded liars just swallow back what they had already spoken
निःसृतं uttered from the mouth, spoken महतां of noble souls वचः words दन्ति दन्त the tusk of an elephant समानं equal to वर्तते remainनीचानां for the lowly people निःसृतं spoken वचः words कूर्म ग्रीव the neck of a tortoise इव like पुनः again and again आयाति comes याति goes away च too
ദന്തിദന്തസമാനം ഹി നിഃസൃതം മഹതാം വചഃ।
കൂര്മഗ്രീവേവ നീചാനാം പുനരായാതി യാതി ച॥
സുഭാഷിതരത്നഭാണ്ഡാഗാരേ॥
മഹത്തുക്കള് പറയുന്ന വാക്കുകള് ആനയുടെ മുഖത്ത് നീണ്ടു വളര്ന്നു നില്ക്കുന്ന ദന്തങ്ങള് പോലെയാണ്. ദന്തങ്ങള് ഒരിക്കല് വളര്ന്നു പുറത്തു വന്നാല് പിന്നെ ആന അവ വായിലോട്ടു തിരിച്ചു വലിച്ചു കൊണ്ടുപോവുകയില്ല. അത് പോലെ മഹാന്മാര് ഉച്ചരിച്ച വാക്കുകളും വാക്കുകള് കൊണ്ട് തന്ന പ്രതിജ്ഞകളും ഒരിക്കലും തിരിച്ചെടുക്കുകയോ തെറ്റിക്കുകയോ ചെയ്യാറില്ല. പക്ഷെ നെറികെട്ട മനുഷ്യരുടെ വാക്കുകള് പുറത്തു വരികയും പിന്നെ ആരും അറിയാത്തത് പോലെ അകത്തേക്ക് തന്നെ പിന്വലിക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യും . ആമയയൂടെ കഴുത്ത് പോലെ ആണ് അത്തരം ആളുകളുടെ പ്രസ്താവനകളും. ചിലപ്പോള് പുറത്ത് വരും, ചിലപ്പോള് അകത്തോട്ടു പോകും.
ഈ ശ്ലോകത്തിന്റെ സാരം എന്തെന്നാല് നല്ല മനുഷ്യര് ഒരിക്കല് പറഞ്ഞ വാക്കുകള് ഒരിക്കലും തെട്ടിക്കുകയില്ല. നിഷേധിക്കുകയും ഇല്ല. അവ ആനയുടെ ദന്തങ്ങള് പോലെ ആണ്. വളര്ച്ചയെത്തുമ്പോള് കൊമ്പുകള് വായില് നിന്ന് പുറത്തോട്ടു വളര്ന്നു നില്ക്കും. പക്ഷെ പുറത്തോട്ടു വളര്ന്ന ദന്തം ആന ഒരിക്കലും വായയുടെ അകത്തോട്ടു തിരിച്ചു കയറ്റി മറച്ച് വയ്ക്കുകയില്ല.
പക്ഷെ നെറികെട്ട ചില വിരുതന്മാരുടെ പ്രസ്താവനകളും ഉറപ്പുകളും പലപ്പോഴും അവസരവാദ പരങ്ങള് ആയിരിക്കും. ഒരു സന്ദര്ഭത്തില് മുഖം രക്ഷിക്കാന് അവര് എന്തും പറയും എന്ത് ഉറപ്പും നല്കും. പക്ഷെ പിന്നീട് അവര് പറഞ്ഞതെല്ലാം വിഴുങ്ങും, മാറ്റിപ്പറയും, നിഷേധിക്കും. ഇത് ആമയുടെത് പോലെയുള്ള സ്വഭാവമാണ്. ആമ എല്ലാ സംഗതികളും സുരക്ഷിതം ആണെന്ന് കണ്ടാല് തന്റെ കഴുത്ത് തൊണ്ടില് നിന്ന് പുറത്തെടുത്ത് കാണിക്കും. പക്ഷെ ചെറിയ ഒരു പ്രശ്നം വന്നാല് പോലും ആമ തല തൊണ്ടിനുള്ളിലേയ്ക്ക് തല പിന്വലിച്ചു കലയും. അവസരവാദികളായ പലരുടെയും വാക്കുകളും ഇതുപോലെ തന്നെയാണ്. പുറത്ത് വരും, പിന്നെ അകത്തോട്ടു വലിയും.
