Poverty forces one to look around and see the sufferings of others

असतः श्री मदान्धस्य दारिद्र्यं परमञ्जनम् ।

आत्मौपम्येन भूतानि दरिद्रः परमीक्षते ॥ १०.१०.१३

Srimad bhagavatam

The best treatment for the blindness that afflicts arrogant people when they are rich and excessively comfortable is an attack of poverty. Poverty, in the case of rich men, acts as collyrium or eye-ointment that would cure the blindness of the eyes. Poverty forces a person to look around himself and see and understand the sufferings of other people who are similarly placed

This statement is attributed to Sage Narada in Srimad Bhagavatham in the episode of Nalakoobhara

असतः for a person who has fallen to evil tendencies and wayward living श्रीमदान्धस्य who has been rendered blind because of his affluence नरस्य man दारिद्र्यं poverty

परं supreme अञ्जनं collyrium eye ointment भवति becomes दरिद्रः the man afflicted with poverty आत्म औपयेन through his own hard experiences भूतानि परं other beings, creatures, affairs of other people ईक्षते view

അസതഃ ശ്രീ മദാന്ധസ്യ ദാരിദ്ര്യം പരമഞ്ജനം ।

ആത്മൌപമ്യേന ഭൂതാനി ദരിദ്രഃ പരമീക്ഷതേ ॥ ൧൦।൧൦।൧൩

കുറച്ചു കാശ് കൈയില്‍ വന്നു എന്ന ചിന്ത കൊണ്ട് പണക്കൊഴുപ്പും അഹങ്കാരവും പിടിപെട്ടു കുരുടന്മാരെപ്പോലെ ജീവിക്കുന്ന ആള്‍ക്ക് അത്തരം അന്ധതയ്ക്കുള്ള ചികിത്സക്കായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന അഞ്ജനം പോലുള്ള ഔഷധം ദാരിദ്ര്യം എന്നത് മാത്രമാണ്. കാശുള്ളവന്‍ അത് നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട് വട്ടം കറങ്ങുമ്പോള്‍ കണ്ണ് തുറക്കും. തന്നെപ്പോലെ ചുറ്റും ഉള്ള എത്രയധികം മനുഷ്യര്‍ ദാരിദ്ര്യം കൊണ്ട് കഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട് എന്ന കാര്യം അയാള്‍ക്ക് തികച്ചും ബോധ്യമാവും. അതോടെ അയാളുടെ അഹങ്കാരം എന്ന അന്ധത വിട്ടുമാറുകയും ചെയ്യും. അതുകൊണ്ടാണ് ദാരിദ്ര്യം അത്തരം വ്യക്തികളെ ചികിത്സിക്കാനുള്ള മരുന്നാണ് എന്ന് പറയുന്നത്.

നാരദര്‍ ശ്രീമദ്‌ ഭാഗവതത്തി നളകൂബര ഉപാഖ്യാനത്തില്‍ പറയുന്നതാണ് ഇത്.
