This is a very complicated issue. In many puranic stories even gods or great personages fall into disgrace because of karmas or curses and they take birth as enemies of the divine and fight with the divine and get killed and attain moksha. Even Hiranyaksha Ravana Kamsa Shishupala etc were like that. And this line of thinking is seen in the itihasas and all puranas too. It seems that the idea of even intense hatred to the divinity makes one think of god for ever and unites him with god.
Pootana is not an isolated case. And puranas are not always logical.
If you want to disagree with the idea no one is affected. Neither puranas nor the thoughts and ideas of the past can ever be changed or re written.
God is the one who gives mukthi. Not you or me.
We stand little chance to challenge his logic.
You can try to analyse logic in a vedantic precept.. but not in a story in a puranam
