रक्षितव्यं सदा वाक्यं वाक्याद् भवति नाशनम् ।

हंसाभ्यां नीयमानस्य कूर्मस्य पतनं यथा ॥५॥

rakṣitavyaṃ sadā vākyaṃ vākyād bhavati nāśanam ।

haṃsābhyāṃ nīyamānasya kūrmasya patanaṃ yathā ॥5॥

One should always be restrained in using words, and should stick on to the words given. The tortoise which was being carried in the air by two swans faced his destruction because he lost control over his words

The story is famous. There was a drought in the jungle and a tortoise was desperate over the drying up of the pond in which he lived. He had two swans as friend. He sought their help to shift to some distant place where there was lot of water. The swans offered to transport him to a distant lake. The plan was that the tortoise would bite firmly in the middle of a piece of log and that the swans would hold the two ends of the log and fly up and carry the friend up in the air and deposit him in his new pond. However all the three agreed on a strict condition that the tortoise would not open his mouth during the aerial transportation. The reason was obvious. If he opened the mouth during the flight, he would fall down to open land and face his nemesis.

As planned, the swans took off holding the log with the tortoise dangling down biting it. As the parade in the air progressed, some urchins playing far below in the ground noticed the strange journey in progress and they clapped and shouted in amazement and glee.

The tortoise in flight heard the shouts emanating from the earth below and could not restrain his curiosity. Just for a moment he forgot himself and his assurance about not opening the mouth, lost his grip on the log and descended down in a steep fall to the ground where he was caught and was gobbled up.

Therefore, restraint in words, and care in keeping words can make all the difference between life and earth.

वाक्यं words सदा always रक्षितव्यं should be kept in control, kept in restraint हंसाभ्यां by swans नीयमानस्य being led कूर्मस्य of the tortoise पतनं fallयथा like वाक्याद् from words नाशनं भवति nemesis, destruction arises

‘ഒരാള്‍ എപ്പോഴും സ്വന്തം വാക്കുകളില്‍ നിയന്ത്രണം പാലിക്കണം, പറഞ്ഞതു പോലെ മാത്രം പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കണം. അരയന്നങ്ങളുടെ സഹായത്തോടെ ആകാശത്തിലൂടെ പറന്നു നടന്ന ആമ സ്വന്തം വാക്കുകള്‍ മറന്നത് കൊണ്ട് വിനാശം നേരിട്ടു’

ആ കഥ പ്രസിദ്ധമാണല്ലോ. കാറ്റില്‍ അപകടകരമായ വരള്‍ച്ച ഉണ്ടായി. വട്ടിവരണ്ടുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു തടാകത്തില്‍ താമസിച്ചിരുന്ന ആമയ്ക്ക് വേവലാതിയായി. അവനെ രക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ അവന്‍റെ സുഹൃത്തുക്കളായ രണ്ടു അരയന്നങ്ങള്‍ തയാറായി. കൂടുതല്‍ വെള്ളം ഉള്ള ദൂരെയുള്ള വല്ല സ്ഥലത്തേയ്ക്കും ആമയെ ആകാശമാര്‍ഗ്ഗം കടത്തിക്കൊടുക്കുവാന്‍ അവര്‍ തയാറായി. ഒരു വടിയുടെ നടുവില്‍ ആമ ദൃഡമായി കടിച്ചിരിക്കണം വടിയുടെ രണ്ടു അറ്റങ്ങളും തൂക്കി എടുത്ത് അരയന്നങ്ങള്‍ ആകാശത്തിലൂടെ പറന്നു ദൂരെ വേറെ ഒരു ജലാശയത്തിലേക്ക് ആമയെ എത്തിക്കും. ഇതായിരുന്നു അവരുടെ പരിപാടി. പക്ഷെ ഈ യാത്രയ്ക്ക് കര്‍ശനമായ ഒരു നിബന്ധന്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.. ഈ ആകാശയാത്രക്കിടയില്‍ ആമ ഒരു കാരണവശാലും വായ തുറക്കരുത്. കാരണം വ്യക്തമാണ്. വായ തുറന്നാല്‍ താഴെ തുറന്നു വിശാലമായി കിടക്കുന്ന ഭൂമിയില്‍ വീഴുകയായിരിക്കും ആമയുടെ ഗതി.

നിശയിച്ച് ഉറപ്പിച്ച പോലെ ആ വടിയും പൊക്കി അരയന്നങ്ങള്‍ ഉയരെ പറന്നു. വടിയുടെ നടുവില്‍ ആമ കടിച്ചു തൂങ്ങുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ആകാശത്തിലൂടെയുള്ള ഈ വിനോദസഞ്ചാരം ആരംഭിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ താഴെ തെരുവില്‍ കളിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന ചില പയ്യന്മാര്‍ ഈ രസകരമായ കാഴ്ച കണ്ടു വിസ്മയത്തോടെ കൈകൊട്ടുകയും ഉറക്കെ പലതും വിളിച്ചു പറയുകയും ചെയ്തു കൊണ്ടേയിരുന്നു. ആകാശയാത്രയില്‍ ആയിരുന്ന ആമ ഈ ആരവങ്ങള്‍ കേള്‍ക്കാനിടയായി. താഴെ എന്താണ് നടക്കുന്നത് എന്നറിയാനുള്ള ഉല്‍ക്കണ്ഠ നിയന്ത്രിക്കാന്‍ ആമയ്ക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല. ഒരു നിമിഷം, ഒരേ നിമിഷം എന്താണ് സംഭവിക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് ചോദിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടി സ്വയം മറന്ന ആമ വായ തുറന്നു. അതോടെ വടിയിലെ പിടി വിട്ടു. ആമ ഭൂമിയിലേയ്ക്ക് കുത്തനെ വീണു. ആള്‍ക്കാര്‍ അവനെ പിടിച്ച് ശാപ്പിട്ടു.

അതാണ്‌, വാക്കുകളില്‍ വേണ്ട നിയന്ത്രണം ഒരാളുടെ ജീവിതവും മരണവും വരെ തീരുമാനിച്ചേക്കും.
