too much of consumption or enjoymenet need not provide satisfaction

न स्वप्नेन जयेन्निद्रां न कामेन स्त्रियं जयेत्।

न चैन्धनैर् जयेद्वह्निं न मद्येन तृषां जयेत्॥

गरुडपुराणे आचारकाण्डे

na svapnena jayennidrāṁ na kāmena striyaṁ jayet|

na caindhanair jayedvahniṁ na madyena tṛṣāṁ jayet||

If one thinks that he could get over the bad effects of excessive sleep by dreaming bright dreams, he is wrong. More and more dreaming can make one sleepier and lazier. That is all

If one thinks he could satisfy his desire for romance by constant company with women, he is again not right. Such company would only increase his desire

If one thinks that if huge quantities of fuel or twigs are added to the raging fire then the fire would wait till such fuel is burnt off, then he has made a mistake. The added fuel would only increase the intensity of the fire.

And

If one thinks he can quench his thirst by drinking more and more toddy, then he is indeed a fool. Toddy can make a person inebriated and addicted but could never satisfy his thirst.

स्वप्नेन by repeated dreaming निद्रां sleep न जयेत् should not, could not overcome, could not get over कामेन by repeatedly indulging in amorous activities स्त्रियं न जयेत् cannot get satisfied in attraction and romance for the fairer sex इन्धनैः through constantly adding fuel वह्निं the fire न जयेत् cannot pacify, cannot satisfy मद्येन by consuming toddy, intoxicating drink तृषां न जयेत् thirst can never be quenched.

ന സ്വപ്നേന ജയേന്നിദ്രാം ന കാമേന സ്ത്രിയം ജയേത്।

ന ചൈന്ധനൈര്‍ ജയേദ്വഹ്നിം ന മദ്യേന തൃഷാം ജയേത്॥

സുന്ദരസ്വപ്നങ്ങള്‍ എപ്പോഴും കണ്ടുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നാല്‍ ഒന്നും ചെയാതെ ഉറങ്ങിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നതിന്‍റെ തിക്തഫലങ്ങള്‍ ഒഴിവാക്കാമെന്ന് ഒരാള്‍ കരുതുന്നു എങ്കില്‍ അയാള്‍ തീര്‍ത്തും വിഡ്ഢി ആണ്

പെണ്ണുങ്ങളുമായി വീണ്ടും വീണ്ടും അനുരാഗത്തിലും പ്രേമത്തിലും എല്ലാം ഇടപെട്ടാല്‍ അത്തരം വികാരങ്ങള്‍ കുറഞ്ഞു വരും എന്ന് സ്വയം വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നതും യുക്തിക്ക് നിരക്കുന്നത് അല്ല.

കത്തിപ്പടരുന്ന തീയില്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ ഇന്ധനവും വിറകും എല്ലാം ചേര്‍ത്ത് വച്ചാല്‍ അതെല്ലാം കത്തുന്നത് വരെ തീ കാത്തിരിക്കും എന്ന് കരുതുന്നത് വ്യാമോഹമാണ്. കൂടുതല്‍ ഇന്ധനം കിട്ടുമ്പോള്‍ തീയ് കൂടുതല്‍ ശക്തി പ്രാപിക്കും

അതുപോലെ ദാഹം തീര്‍ക്കാന്‍ മദ്യപാനം നടത്താമെന്ന് കരുതുന്നത് വിചിത്രമാണ്. മദ്യം ഒരാളെ ലഹരിക്ക് അടിമയാക്കും.. അയാളുടെ വിവേകം നശിക്കും. പക്ഷെ മദ്യം കുടിച്ചു ഒരാളുടെ ദാഹം ഒരിക്കലും ശമിക്കാന്‍ പോകുന്നില്ല.
