Danda means punishment especially physical punishment

while dealing with the word दण्ड someone said that it meant defence..
That idea is misconceived.
Danda means punishment especially physical punishment
My analysis
On what authority are you saying this.. ? It is punishment, no doubt.. दण्डः comes from दण्डयति..mening to punish, to levy fine, to beat with a stick and so on
Apte defines Danda as chastisement, punishment corporal or other wise, punishment in general
Kalidasa in Raghuvamsham यथापकार दण्डानां the rulers of Raghu clan were very careful in meting out punishment commensurate with the offence..
एवं राजापथ्यकारिषु तीक्ष्णदण्डो राजा the king is severe in punishment to persons who do things which are prejudicial to the king or the state
दण्ड also refere to imprisonment, attack, and can refer to a combatant army even
the idea that danda means defence is misconceived.. At best deterrent punishment to avoid breach in defence too can be called danda..
Please refer to standard dictionaries and lexicons before dishing out opinions.. Sanskrit is a very standardised language.. No guesswork is necessary..
