Manu smrithi was a treatise on law and jurisprudence as applicable to the social mileau prevailing at the time the text evolved. Law in every country, every system evolved as situations precedents vary. That is how basic laws and case laws or judge made laws happen and the original precepts vary or get amended. But right to life and basic liberty dignity of a human being and what we find as fundamental rights common in all legal systems have to be maintained as immutable.
Regarding the law maker manu whether he is the svayabuva manu who presided over the first manvantaram.there is no certainty. The text only talks of sage Manu.
