Another interesting advice from Kshemendra in Charucharya.
===============
A person who is addicted to hooch and is in a drunken state should not set out to do things which are unbecoming of humans and suitable only to demons and ogres
The progenies of the Vrishni race after getting drunk thoroughly started hitting one another with long growth of grass, and in this process the entire race perished..
==================
The story of annihilation of the Yadu or Vrishni race to which the Lord belonged is just before the Swargarohanam of Krishna is very famous, and a few Puranas and Mahabharatham too contains the story..The story has minor variations, but the general outline is the same..
As we all know, Lord Krishna had married 16008 wives and he is reported to have had ten sons from each one of these wives..
So the sons of Krishna themselves could fill the population of a town or perhaps a state..
In addition, Krishna's brothers, and cousins all had lots of offspring..
So the population of Yadavas, who belong to the race of Vrishnis, and hence called Varshneyas was overflowing to the brim.
And the people exposed to luxury and plentitude, had in due course become boisterous and addicted to hooch and other unsavoury habits too.
The lord was anxious that this population was finished off before He left for Vaikundam as his mission on earth was completed.
And things happened according to His wish..
Samba, the son of Jambavathi, one of the eight main queens of Krishna, was a pastmaster in drinking and being boisterous..
He collected all his brothers one day and was on a spree of boozing..
On their way they met the sage Durvasas of terrible temper..
Suddenly an idea to play a prank on the sage stuck Samba..
He disguised himself as a pregnant lady in her advanced stage of confinement with puffed up belly, and approached the sage in the company of his numerous brothers..
The party paid false obeisance to the sage, and in a chorus, they informed the sage that their sister was pregnant and then requested the sage to predict what would be the gender of the child..
The sage who was a jnani who knew everything, clearly saw through the prank.. and was overcome with rage..
He said, " This fellow will give birth to a musala or iron pestle , and that will cause the complete destruction of your Vrishni clan."
The pranksters now saw the danger..
The sage's words came true.
And Samba delivered an iron pestle..or Musala..
Sensing the danger the piece of iron could cause, the brothers all sat together in the beach covering the borders of Dvaraka and ground the iron material on stones so that the entire pestle but for a small nail shaped piece was powdered and the powder spread all over the beach..
From the powder grew tall, thick and sturdy growth of grass on the beach..
The jubilant brothers were celebrating the disappearance and disposal of the dangerous pestle, again with drinking, and drinking again..
Once they got inebriated, they became quarrelsome and started uprooting the tall grass growths and hitting one another to death..
Before long the entire clan was finished off as a heap of dead bodies.
The story does not stop here..
The small piece from the iron pestle which had remained ungrounded, was thrown away into the water..
A fish swallowed the piece of Iron..
A fisherman caught the fish and retrieved the piece of iron.
The fisherman bartered this piece of iron to a hunter..
The hunter fixed this as the sharp tip of an arrow, and went on a hunt for birds..
Bhagavan Krishna after relinquishing everything, and fixing his mind on the idea of leaving His mortal body by his yogic powers and leaving for Vaikuntam, was sitting atop a tree, and the beautiful crimson tip of his big toe was showing up..
The hunter, saw the toe and mistook it to be the head and beak of a bird and sent his arrow up..
The arrow hit the toe of the Lord, and the Lord had at that moment concentrated all his Pranic enegies on his head and was departing for Vaikunda..
The impact of the arrow pulled down the inert body of the Lord..
So technically, the same arrow made out the piece of iron from the pestle delivered by drunken Samba caused the demise of the greatest of the Vrishnis and Yadavas, Lord Krishna Himself..
The evil consequences of drinking are brought out graphically in this incident and also in this inspiring slokam..
