स्वल्पस्नायुवसावशेषमलिनं निर्मांसमप्यस्थि गोः।

श्वा लब्ध्वा परितोषेमेति न तु तत्तस्य क्षुधाशान्तर्ये॥

सिंहो जंबुकमङ्गमागतमपि त्यक्त्वा निहन्ति द्विपं

सर्वः कृच्छ्रगतोऽपि वांछति जनः सत्वानुरूपं फलम्॥

सुभाषितरत्नमाला ४१६

svalapasnāyuvasāvaśeṣamalinaṁ nirmāṁsamapyasthi goḥ|

śvā labdhvā paritoṣemeti na tu tattasya kṣudhāśāntarye||

siṁho jaṁbukamaṅgamāgatamapi tayktvā nihanti dvipaṁ

sarvaḥ kṛcchragato'pi vāṁchati janaḥ satvānurūpaṁ phalam||

A dog is extremely happy and even jubiliant when it discovers a piece of declayed bone left of a dead cow, the putrid bone containing just little tendon and marrow and practically no flesh. This is in spite of the fact that the dog knows very well that the bone and its contents would not satisfy its extreme hundger.

However, a lion would ignore even a fox that had landed upon its very lap and would set out to hunt and kill an elephant and use only the flesh of that big hunted prey for his food. People alwyas yearn and pursue lifestyles befitting their own stature even if their present status in life at any time is not very rosy.

 श्वा the dog स्वल्प paltry, little स्नायु tendon, muscle वसावशेष little remnants of marrow मलिनं unclean, putrid निर्मांसं without fles गोः of the cow अस्थि bone लब्ध्वा having obtained परितोषं extreme happiness, satisfaction एति attain . तत् that अस्थि bone न तु not indeed तस्य his क्षुधा great hunger शान्तये satisfaction सिंहः lion अङ्गं own lap आगतं who has come जम्बुकं the fox अपि even त्यक्त्वा just leaving, just ignoring द्विपं the elephant निहन्ति hunts, kills . सर्वः everyon कृच्छ्र गतः even when is dire sraits, even if in difficulties अपि too जनः people सत्वानुरूपं befitting own stature फलं results वान्छति desire

ശ്വാ ലബ്ധ്വാ പരിതോഷേമേതി ന തു തത്തസ്യ ക്ഷുധാശാന്തര്യേ॥

സിംഹോ ജംബുകമങ്ഗമാഗതമപി ത്യക്ത്വാ നിഹന്തി ദ്വിപം

സര്‍വ: കൃച്ഛ്രഗതോഽപി വാംഛതി ജനഃ സത്വാനുരൂപം ഫലം॥

സുഭാഷിതരത്നമാലാ ൪൧൬

ഒരു പട്ടിക്കു അല്പം മാംസവും മജ്ജയും ചേര്‍ന്ന് അളിഞ്ഞു കിടക്കുന്ന പശുവിന്‍റെ ഒരു എല്ലിന്‍ കഷണം കിട്ടിയാല്‍ അതു തന്നെ അളവില്ലാത്ത സന്തോഷം ആയിരിക്കും. ഈ എല്ലിന്‍ തുണ്ടുകൊണ്ട് അതിന്റെ വിശപ്പ്‌ മാറ്റാന്‍ കഴിയില്ല എന്ന് നല്ലവണ്ണം അറിഞ്ഞാല്‍ പോലും.

അതെ സമയം വിശന്നു കിടക്കുന്ന ഒരു സിംഹം അതിന്‍റെ മടിയില്‍ ഒരു കുറുനരി ചാടി വീണാല്‍ അതിനെ തള്ളിമാറ്റി സ്വയം ആരു കൊമ്പനാനയെ വേട്ടയാടാന്‍ പോകും. വേട്ടയാടി കൊന്ന ആനയുട്ടെ മാംസം ഭക്ഷിച്ചേ വിഷപ്പടക്കുകയുള്ളൂ.

ജീവിതത്തില്‍ വെല്ലുവിളികളും അത്രയൊന്നും ആശാസ്യമല്ലാത്ത പരിതസ്തൈതികളും നേരെടെണ്ടിവരുമ്പോള്‍ പോലും എല്ലാവരും തങ്ങളുടെ സ്വന്തം തരവും ആഭിജാത്യവും കണക്കിലെടുത്തുകൊണ്ട് മാത്രമേ ജീവിതം മുന്നോട്ടു കൊണ്ടുപോവാറുള്ളൂ
