वृद्धबालौ न हन्तव्यौ न च स्त्री नैव पृष्ठतः।
तृणपूर्णमुखश्चैव तवास्मीति च यो वदेत्॥
महाभारते शान्तिपर्वे॥
vṛddhabālau na hantavyau na ca strī naiva pṛṣṭhataḥ।
tṛṇapūrṇamukhaścaiva tavāsmīti ca yo vadet॥
mahābhārate śāntiparve॥
Mahabharatam prescribes some rules that makes exception to the ultimate act of depriving someone of his life.
An elderly person or a little boy should never be killed
A woman too should never be punished with death
In battle, encounter or combat, one should not kill another, going behind the back
If a person fills his mouth with grass and reveals utter surrender, if a person has fallen on ground and his mouth is covered by grass, then he should not be killed.
And if a person surrenders and declared that “I am belonging to you” then he should not be killed.
वृद्ध old persons बालौ young boys न हन्तव्यौ should not be executed, killed स्त्री woman च too न हन्तव्या should not be deprived of life पृष्ठतः from the back गत्वा going नरःman नैव हन्तव्यः should never be killed तृण पूर्ण मुखः who has filled his mouth with grass in utter subjugation, who has fallen on bare ground and his mouth is covered by grass, न हन्तव्य: should not be killed यः who तवास्मि I am yours, I am belonging to you, I am surrendering to you इति thus वदेत् says स च he too न हन्तव्यः should not be killed
വൃദ്ധബാലൌ ന ഹന്തവ്യൌ ന ച സ്ത്രീ നൈവ പൃഷ്ഠതഃ।
തൃണപൂര്ണമുഖശ്ചൈവ തവാസ്മീതി ച യോ വദേത്॥
മഹാഭാരതേ ശാന്തിപര്വേ॥
ഏതു കാരണം കൊണ്ടായാലും, മറ്റൊരാളുടെ ജീവന് എടുക്കേണ്ട സന്ദര്ഭം നിയമപരമായും ധാര്മ്മികമായും ഉണ്ടാവുകയാണെങ്കില് പോലും, താഴെ പറയുന്ന തരത്തിലുള്ള വ്യക്തികളുടെ വധം ഒഴിവാക്കേണ്ടതാണെന്ന് മഹാഭാരതം അനുശാസിക്കുന്നു.
ഒരു വൃദ്ധനോ ബാലനോ ഒരിക്കലും വധിക്കപ്പെടരുത്
ഒരു സ്ത്രീയും വധാര്ഹയല്ല
യുദ്ധത്തിലോ, ഏറ്റുമുട്ടലിലോ ഒരിക്കലും ഒരാളേയും പിന്നില് നിന്ന് കുത്തി കൊല്ലരുത്.
പരാജിതനായി ഭൂമിയില് വീണു വായില് പുല്ലും നിറച്ചു കിടക്കുന്ന ഒരാളെ ഒരിക്കലും വധിക്കരുത്
പിന്നെ അഭയം തേടി, ഞാന് താങ്കളുടേതാണ് എന്ന് പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് മുന്നില് നില്ക്കുന്ന ഒരാളെ ഒരിക്കലും കൊലപ്പെടുത്തരുത്.
