This technique is adopted in literature, in politics and social interactions too very frequently to good effect too.
Human mind is very funny.
It gets drawn to the apparently bad things, and when the good part is highlighted through the apparent left handed compliments, the idea gets a priority place in the attention of the reader. That is very natural.
All great writers have called Krishna a thief, but a lovable thief..
Ramayanam.. often gets significance as the story of a Lady, Sita..
And obviously, playing of dice, gambling.. is a part of the epic Mahabharatham
So there is nothing amiss about the facts.. but the facts have been given a positive touch with dark shade or vice-versa.
It is an established, literary technique.
