Nava Ratra has for its background the killing of Mahishaasura,, the story finding place in slightly different forms in Devi Bhagavatham, Markandeya Puranam,
The devi cult in that form and most of the puranas cannot be older than 1500 years.. but in Harappa Yoni worship.. the presence of Mother Goddes and Phallic worship of a male God are indicated..
Must be 3500 BC or later.. But that has nothing to do with Navarathri..
Durga Puja in the East and Dussera in Mysore, Andhra and Tamilnadu coincided..on the basis of confluence of Bhadrapada and Ashvina.. saka months..
The Palakkad Iyers have migrated from Tamilnadu form 1200 to 1300 AD and they are following the Golu etc from their Tamil Origin.. And our Iyer existence in Tamilnadu is recorded much earlier too.. So our system must be at least more than 1500 years..
However, we do not know whether this was celebrated in the same manner in the Gupta era etc 500 AD or before..
Navaratri celebrations in Kerala are not similar to Tamilnadu..
The establishment of the Mysore empire appears to have affected positively the importance of navaratri in Karnataka..
