शृगालोऽपि वने कर्ण शशैः परिवृतो वसन्।
मन्यते सिंहमात्मानं यावत् सिंहं न पश्यति॥
महाभारते कर्णपर्वे ३३-३६
śṛgālo'pi vane karṇa śaśaiḥ parivṛto vasan|
manyate siṁhamātmānaṁ yāvat siṁhaṁ na paśyati||
mahābhārate karṇaparve 33-36
The jackal is residing in a forest.
He is living among hares who keep him constant company.
He chases them and often catches them for food too.
The hares take to flight immediately on seeing the jackal
So he thinks he is very powerful and persuades himself to the exalted thought that he is the monarch of the forest, the lion.
This is because he has not seen the lion and he has not understood the real valour of a lion.
This is the idea conveyed by the above slokam quoted from Mahabharatham. This occurs in a conversation of Shalya with Karna.
ശൃഗാലോഽപി വനേ കര്ണ ശശൈഃ പരിവൃതോ വസന്।
മന്യതേ സിംഹമാത്മാനം യാവത് സിംഹം ന പശ്യതി॥
മഹാഭാരതേ കര്ണപര്വേ ൩൩-൩൬
ഒരു കുറ്റിക്കാട്ടില് താമസിക്കുകയാണ് ഒരു കുറുനരി. അവന്റെ ചുറ്റും ഉള്ളത് കുറെ മുയലുകള് മാത്രമാണ്.. അവനെ കാണുമ്പോള് മുയലുകള് ഓടിയൊളിക്കുന്നു. തനിക്ക് പിടിക്കാന് പട്ടുന്നവയില് ചിലവയെ അവന് ഓടിപ്പിടിച്ച് ശാപ്പിടുകയും ചെയ്യും. എല്ലാ മുയലുകളും തന്നെ കാണുമ്പോള് ജീവനും കൊണ്ട് ഓടുന്നത് കണ്ട് കുറുനരി താന് ഏറെ ശക്തനും കാട്ടിലെ രാജാവും സിംഹവും ഒക്കെ ആണെന്ന് സ്വയം ധരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. പക്ഷെ ഇതെല്ലാം ആ കുറുനരി ഒരു യഥാര്ത്ഥ സിംഹത്തെ കാണുന്നത് വരെ മാത്രം ആയിരിക്കും.
മുകളില് കൊടുത്ത മഹാഭാരതത്തിലെ ശ്ലോകത്തിന്റെ പൊരുള് ഇതാണ്. ഇത് ശല്യന് കര്ണ്ണനോട് പറയുന്നതായിട്ടാണ് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുള്ളത്
