विद्या शस्त्रं च शास्त्रं च द्वे विद्ये प्रतिपत्तये ।

आद्या हास्याय वृद्धत्वे द्वितीयाद्रियते सदा ॥७॥

Hitopadesham

vidyā śastraṃ ca śāstraṃ ca dve vidye pratipattaye ।

ādyā hāsyāya vṛddhatve dvitīyādriyate sadā ॥7॥

People can get education and training essentiall in two types of activities. The first is the training and gaining expertise in use of weapons and armaments. The second is extensive training in sciences and arts.

As a person reaches advanced age, the training and expertise in use of arms just becomes ineffective. He can either laugh at himself seeing his own clumsiness or alternately if he exerts himself and fails in the right use of arms, he would become the laughing stock of all people around.

However, education and training in arts and sciences have greater enduring value and utility. Such knowledge would remain with people at any age and would attract great respect from all around.

ജനങ്ങള്‍ മിക്കവാറും രണ്ടു വ്യത്യസ്ഥ പദ്ധതികളില്‍ ഉള്ള പഠനക്രമങ്ങളാണ് പിന്തുടരാരുള്ളത്. ചിലര്‍ ആയുധാഭ്യാസത്തിനും അവയുടെ പ്രയോഗത്തിനും ഊന്നല്‍ നല്‍കുന്നു. മറ്റുചിലര്‍ കലകളും ശാസ്ത്രങ്ങളും അഭ്യസിക്കുന്നു.

ആളുകള്‍ക്ക് പ്രായം ഏറുമ്പോള്‍ ആയുധങ്ങളുടെ പ്രയോഗത്തില്‍ ഉള്ള വൈദഗ്ദ്യം സ്വാഭാവികമായി കുറഞ്ഞു വരുന്നു. അവര്‍ക്ക് വയസ്സായി എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു സ്വയം ചിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് അത് സഹിക്കാം. അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ കായികക്ഷമതയുടെ അഭാവത്തിലും ആയുധം പ്രയോഗിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചു അത്രയൊന്നും വിജയിക്കാതെ പരിഹാസം നേരിടാം.

പക്ഷെ കലയിലും ശാസ്ത്രങ്ങളിലും പരിശീലനവും വൈദഗ്ദ്യവും നെടിയെടുത്തവര്‍ക്ക് അവരുടെ കഴിവുകള്‍ക്ക് നിരന്തരമായ അംഗീകാരം ലഭിച്ചു കൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കും...പ്രായം അതിനൊരു തടസ്സമാവില്ല.
