we are burnt out by desire, but ..



भोगा न भुक्ता वयमेव भुक्ताः तपो न तप्तं वयमेव तप्ताः।
कालो न यातो वयमेव याताः तृष्णा न जीर्णा वयमेव जीर्णाः॥
bhogā na bhuktā vayameva bhuktāḥ tapo na taptaṁ vayameva taptāḥ |

A very thought provoking subhashitam by the great philosopher poet king..

We pride ourselves in hoarding and enjoying objects and thing of pleasure.. we expect a lot of befits and good results.. but ultimately if we look back in the end, we would find that instead of enjoying the sense objects, they have drained us in the process of enjoyment but finally have left us with little or no satisfaction.
We claim that we have undergone a lot of penance and gained so much of benefit and virtue.. But in fact we have rather burnt ourselves out in the end..
We feel that time is running fast and going away from us.. But in fact, it is not time that goes away but we are just racing away from time, to face the end of life.
And we sharpen and encourage our desires in the hope that we can satisfy them.. but the desires never get consumed or satisfied.. but ultimately we consumed and even shredded by the desires..

अस्माभिः भोगा न भुक्ता ( even though we may thing that we are enjoying,) we are not really enjoying or consuming the objects of pleasure.
भोगवस्तुभिः वयं भुक्ता एव actually we are getting drained or consumed by the sense objects
अस्माभिः तपः न तप्तं ( even though we feel we are undergoing austerities) we are not actually doing any effective penance.
वयं एव तपसा तप्ताः we are just burnt out by the austerities and penance.
कालः न यातः we feel that time is running fast.. But time actually does not get affected by our existence
वयं एव याताः but as time advances we get drained out and are racing towards the ends of our innings.
तृष्णा न जीर्णा we feel that our desires would get satisfied with our constant enjoyment .. But desires never get completely fulfilled.
वयं एव जीर्णाः However we alone get consumed by desires and find our nemesis..

His divine touch...



if we filter through some anecdotes in the Purana or similar lore, it is quite possible that we may hit upon some poorva katha about the state of Putana at the moment she breastfed the Lord and how did she became a rakshasi and all..
But it is not very relevant..

Even though it was with the dark intent to feed the child with poison and kill him, the sparsha deeksha must have purified her of all her sins and the Lord and she would have discovered that such a purified soul did not deserve to be present in this world..
Her presence at the lotus feet of Narayana has already been ensured.


The supreme ecstasy of motherhood is when the mother introduces the tits of her breast into the soft lips of the infant and the child starts to suckle instinctively.. 
Any woman feeling that thrill would have simply forgotten what she was, though she was a monster intent on killing.. 
A parallel idea to Putana can be found in the speech of Lady Macbeth..

What beast was ’t, then,
That made you break this enterprise to me?
When you durst do it, then you were a man;
And to be more than what you were, you would
Be so much more the man. Nor time nor place
Did then adhere, and yet you would make both.

Added to the ecstasy of feeding any child just think of the effect when the child is the Supreme being manifest in that form

And realization of the supreme can occur to a person all too suddenly, and this Lady Putana was always thinking of ways and means of feeding this child , and incidentally the child itself who is the God.. and her concentration must have been absolute and the sense of purpose unshakable.
Is this not enough for emancipation?

investigation.. the Incometax Style..



I have had eleven years of experience in the Investigation setup of the Incometax Department, six years as an Inspector of Incometax, and later five years as a Deputy Director of Incometax Investigation..

In fact this is a specialized job and not everyone who joins as Inspector would have had such long tenure.. with Search and Investigation operations.. planning, executing and following up, and defending the results too..
In retrospect I am amused with myslef.. I was a puny five footer, a soft spoken, academically inclined fellow with no claims of physical or mental agility..

But then it happened so....

The investigative achievements are not worth recall, because, it is part of the official life, and the government of India has paid me fairly well..
And when there were successes by way of seizure of cash, jewellery etc, the department has given us rewards.. free of taxation..

The department looks professionalised and dapper now..
But fourty years ago, we had to exist and survive on our own ingenuity.
If we received an information and we had to trace a telephone number we would have to sit and read the telephone directory entry by entry.. guessing all sorts of permutations and combinations..
I remember having gone through the telephone directory of madras of 1980 in three voulumes or so each of a few hundreds of pages, that too many times over, just to search the telephone numbers and addresses of suspected tax evaders. No searchable direcories in the web, no googling..
We did not have vehicles.. For reconnaissance we would have to just walk along sprawling roads.. And in the middle 1970s the Chennai Corporation had assigned new numbers to buildings en masse.. and the old and new numbers were totally unrelated..and the entire investigation would be worse that a maze, a jigsaw puzzle..
Reconnaissance was an art, a dangerous, risky game.

But that was all the part of the job.. you were paid to do that only.

But the day of search was a real challenge to the officer and the Inspector organizing the raid or search operations.
It was necessary that every known premises of the suspected tax evader and his associates and henchmen should be covered simultaneously, and the commencing time was so sacrosanct.
If the operations covered many cities all over India, still we should ensure that our people knocked at the door of each rendezvous exactly the same time.. anywhere ..

And to maintain secrecy, we would give the search warrants and the briefs--brief description of the operation listing what exactly we expected to find--the route map to reach the place of action etc, in sealed covers, to be opened only five or ten minutes before the strike..
Those days we did not even take police protection for the search operations.

It is was thrilling, and it was nightmarish too

The conduct of a search is more taxing than conducting a marriage.
.Really Taxing on the taxmen

Then we had funny and easy going members in our search parties, who will take everything easy..

We had to spot them and include them in search parties where they can do no harm or damage..

We had little choice and we could not avoid them because when we had to muster a large number of persons just for manpower, we did not bank heavily on efficiency of all.

But still there were some really extraordinarily funny people.

I am remembering on old dandyish Iyengar Inspector,, who will daily come office dressed neatly sporting a Namam(the vertical marks on the forehead made of some special clay, according to religious faith) etc, spend the day for sometime in office and greater time in the canteen, and would get away without much work..
He had only a couple of years to retire, and he had not cleared the qualitying examination which could make him an officer..
So his career was blessed with immunity.

But he was an eager volunteer for search operations..
One added attraction during the searches is that the parties would be served with nice food and snacks at regular intervals.. at government expenses.

This Inspector was a "personal search " expert.. At the time of start of the search operation and if and when anyone leaves the premises when the search is in progress, we would ask all the persons present in the premises or the persons leaving, to hand over to us whatever they carried in their pockets and in their persons. We are empowered to search the persons too..

The lady members were to be searched by ladies in our search parties.. Of course certain restrictions regarding pooja rooms, holy books, and the particular religious practices of the persons whose premises are searched are to be followed.

Our hero, when once he enters the premises would tell all in the party to ensure that personal search should be conducted with reference to all those who are present.. He would tell others to do it , but he would not care to do anything on his own.

During a search, we had taken this man too with us ..
The victim was accosted very early in the morning.. he was a middle aged rustic person, sitting in the toilet with a single bath towel around his waist..
The man was confronted and the search operation went on and on for about 12 hours and it was six in the evening..The person whom we were proceeding against was being grilled all the time and he had little chance to move away from the presence of the officers at any time.
The documents and unaccounted or suspectedly unaccounted money etc were seized, and the Panchanama.. or the seizure mahazar was being prepared.. And the search team was almost ready to leave.
The "personal search" inspector suddenly remembered that the person who had been called from the toilet in the early morning and was being grilled by us all along was not subjected to personal search..
He promptly reported that to the ADI.. the Assistant Director of Incometax, who led the team..
The ADI clearly knew that there was nothing to be gained by making a personal search of the man in question..
The man has nothing on him except a bath towel around his waist and he had just come out of the toilet early in the morning.
.
But the ADI did not want to disappoint our great Inspector.

He told the inspector to carry out the personal search himself, while others attended to the conclusion formalities for the search operation.
The inspector who prided on personal search, approached the victim pompously and informed that he was going to conduct a personal search on the latter..
The victim was already tense and irritated.. He was not exactly suave and effusive at that stage..
He just stood up, removed the bath towel that was all he was dressed with and asked the inspector to see everything.

And our dapper Inspector had the sight of his life..
And an unforgettable experience on personal search..

Dedicated to such funny souls in the Incometax .. past present and future..

Yes, each person will have a mind of his own.. and his thoughts will not be identical with those around him.. But then unity and amity in thought wherever possible alone can make the social life possible and tolerable.

Each reservoir of water may contain water with different tastes. But the water should not be polluted, toxic.. and should not breed pests and mosquitos.

Each class of people will have their own tradition.. but it should be ensured that such traditions do not alienate them from others.

Yes, the timbre and tone of the voice produced by each mouth is different.. But then there should be some sort of rules in forming words and voices.. Otherwise, there will be chaos and noise pollution..

Variety is the spice of life..
But spice makes food tasty in moderate quantities..
And spices in excessive quantities can scald the tongue and burn the stomach..

And attitudes of each person, even though of identical clan, lineage, nationality and so on vary.. 

Each one has a separate addres.. That might apply even to the individual cells and even smaller building blocks of our body ..

In fact, Rigvedam.. which forms the foundation of our culture, recognized the subtle differences and compllexities in creation..

.And its final call was unity in diversity..
it calls upon us..

This indeed is the ultimate test in friendship..
In genuine friendship when one sees happiness in a friend , he too becomes very happy.. And when he sees grief in the friend, he is filled with grief too..
The combination of the two is the real test.
The happiness and grief are reflected by him just like an image is reflected from a good mirror.

Spontaneity is the foundation for genuine friendship. The responses should come without any editing or manipulation..
A true friend would just reflect the feelings of his own pal just like a mirror..

Today I had a discussion about this issue with a learned friend..
There the depth of friendship was discussed at another more profound plane
My remark there on the mirror analogy was

"Not only that ..a mirror can reflect only to the extent what the source has.
The light can reveal only what is available.
But a friendship can produce and give what we do not have.. and that too without asking."

Of course fast friendship can go much deeper..
But the idea conveyed by the subhashitam is very valid.. only that we can build up further on that..

crisis is the test...

The same subhashitam with minor variations found in an antholology of wise saying... and the classical childrens story Hitopadesham. by Narayana Pandita..
may be one can find some slightly alterred variant somewhere else too..
But the message conveyed is clear and loud..

A man could really test the worth, utility and sincerity of the following only after testing them through rubbing on the touchstone of danger..
( We use the jasper touchstone to test the quality of Gold)
The objects subjected to such tests are
1. Friends 2. Close relatives 3. Kin and associates 4. Own resourcefulness 5. Own courage 6.. Females 7. Servants and employees

If the persons and qualities as listed above stay with a man when he faces dangers and helpls him to have some benefit then they are useful.
Otherwise, they are just empty words..

state of mind decides the efficiency

सर्पाः पिबन्ति पवनं न च दुर्बलास्ते
शुष्कैस्तृणैः वनगजाः बलिनो भवति।
कन्दैः फलैः मुनिवराः क्षपयन्ति कालं
सन्तोष एव पुरुषस्य परं निधानम्॥

sarpāḥ pibanti pavanaṁ na ca durbalāste
śuṣkaistṛṇaiḥ vanagajāḥ balin bhavati|
kandaiḥ phalaiḥ munivarāḥ kṣapayanti kālaṁ

We run after material possessions, and make claims of great accomplishments, underline our superiority over others, all in our attempt to feel happiness of sorts.. But such possessions and tall claims can give some temporary kick.. and then we would fall back to mediocrity..
However there are great people who can be just happy as they are, with whatever they have.. Such happiness is the mainstay of life.. That is mature and eternal happiness..

The meaning the the Sloka is

The snakes survive just drinking air and nothing else . But they are never weak
( I do not want to go into the merits of the claim.. We observe that a snake could swallow some prey, and keep it inside its long digestive track for days and days.. and no more food is required for the reptile for long periods.. During these periods of lazy existence, they open their mouths often, and the one who watches gets the idea that the snake is eating air.. Anyways the snake survives)

The elephants, the huge and powerful dwellers of the forest have only grass and leaves of the plants as their food.. Still they maintain their weight , health and strength too.

The sages and hermits in the forest have only the tubers and fruits around for their food..Still they remain active and wise.

Therefore the mainstay for life is just happiness and contentment...

നാം, സാധാരണ മനുഷ്യര്‍ മിക്കാവാറും എല്ലായിപ്പോഴും ഭൌതികമായ സുഖസൌകര്യങ്ങളുടെ പിന്നാലെ ഓടിനടക്കുന്നു. ഭൌതികമായ നേട്ടങ്ങള്‍ അളവുകോലാക്കി നമ്മുടെ നേട്ടങ്ങള്‍ വിലയിരുത്തി സ്വയം പുകഴുത്തുന്നു. ഇപ്രകാരുള്ള നേട്ടങ്ങള്‍ കാണിച്ചു മറ്റുള്ളവരില്‍ നിന്നും നമുക്കുള്ള മേന്മ എടുത്തുകാണിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നു. ഇതൊക്കെ ചെയ്യുന്നതില്‍ നമുക്ക് അളവുകവിഞ്ഞ സന്തോഷവും ആണ്. പക്ഷെ ഒരുകാര്യം ആലോചിക്കണം. ഇത്തരം നേട്ടങ്ങളും ഉയര്‍ന്ന അവകാശവാദങ്ങളും എല്ലാം നമുക്ക് ക്ഷണികങ്ങളായ അഭിമാന നിമിഷങ്ങളും പെട്ടെന്ന് ആവിയായി പോകാവുന്ന സന്തോഷവും തന്നു എന്നിരിക്കാം. പക്ഷെ വൈകാതെ നാം നമ്മുടെ ഏറെയൊന്നും പ്രാധാന്യം അവകാശപ്പെടാനില്ലാത്ത സാധാരനജീവിതത്തിലെയ്ക്ക് നാം വീണ്ടും വഴുതിവീഴും.

പക്ഷെ ധന്യന്മാരായ ചില മനുഷ്യരുണ്ട്‌. അവര്‍ ഏതു നിലയില്‍ ആയാലും അവര്‍ക്ക് എന്തൊക്കെ ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും ഏതു പ്രദേശത്ത് ആയാലും എപ്പോഴും ഏറെ സന്തോഷത്തോടെ ജീവിയ്ക്കുന്നു. തരമുള്ള ജീവിതത്തിന് സ്ഥായിയായ് അടസ്ഥാനം ആ സമീപനം മാതമാണ്. അതാണ്‌ പക്വത നിറഞ്ഞ, എന്നും ഒരുപോലെ നിലനില്‍ക്കുന്ന ആനന്ദം.

മുകളില്‍ ഉദ്ധരിച്ച ശ്ലോകത്തിന്‍റെ അര്‍ത്ഥം.

വായു മാത്രം വിഴുങ്ങി പാമ്പുകള്‍ ആരോഗ്യത്തോടെ ജീവിക്കുന്നു. അവ ഒരിക്കലും ക്ഷീണിതരോ ബലം കുറഞ്ഞവരോ ആവുന്നില്ല.
( വായു ഭക്ഷിച്ച് പാമ്പുകള്‍ ജീവിക്കുന്ന എന്ന ആശയം ശരിയാണോ എന്ന കാര്യത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് ഇവിടെ കടക്കുന്നില്ല. നമുക്കറിയാം. ഒരു പാമ്പ് ഒരുപ്രാവശ്യം വലിയ ഒരു ഇരയെ പിടിച്ചു വിഴുങ്ങിയാല്‍ ആ ഇര പാമ്പിന്‍റെ നീണ്ട ശരീരത്തില്‍ കിടന്നു അവിടെയുള്ള ദഹനരസങ്ങള്‍ കൊണ്ട് ഒത്തിരി ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ എടുത്തു മാത്രം ആഹാരമായി മാറുന്നു. അത്തരം ദഹനപ്രക്രിയ നടക്കുന്ന കാലഘട്ടത്തില്‍ പാമ്പിനു വേറെ ആഹാരം ഒന്നും ആവശ്യം വരികയില്ല. ഒരു പ്രവൃത്തിയും ചെയ്യാന്‍ ഇല്ലാതെ പാമ്പ് ഇര വിഴുങ്ങി അത് ദഹിക്കാന്‍ എടുക്കുന്ന ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ അത്രയും വായും പൊളിച്ച് കിടക്കും. ഇത് കാണുന്ന ആളുകള്‍ പാമ്പ്‌ ആഹാരത്തിനു പകരം കാറ്റ് അകത്താക്കി ജീവിതം മുന്നോട്ടു കൊണ്ടുപോവുകയാണെന്ന് ധരിക്കും. കാറ്റാണോ തവളയാണോ ആഹാരം എന്നല്ല ഇവിടെ പ്രശ്നം.. പാമ്പ് വല്ലവിധേനയും ജീവിതം നിലനിര്‍ത്തുന്നു. )

ഏറെ ശക്തരും ഭീമസ്വരൂപരും ആയി കാട്ടില്‍ മദിച്ചു ഉല്ലസിച്ചു നടക്കുന്ന ആനകള്‍ പുല്ലും ഇലകളും ചെടികളും മരക്കൊമ്പുകളും മറ്റുമാണ് അവരുടെ തീറ്റയായി ഉള്‍ക്കൊള്ളുന്നത്. പക്ഷെ അവ അവരുടെ രൂപവും ആഹാരവും ശക്തിയും എല്ലാം എന്നും ഒട്ടും കുറയാതെ കാത്തു സൂക്ഷിക്കുന്നു.
വനാന്തരങ്ങളില്‍ ആശ്രമം കെട്ടി താമസിക്കുന്ന മുനിവര്യന്മാര്‍ എന്നും തങ്ങളുടെ ആഹാരമായി സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നത് കാറ്റില്‍ നിന്ന് കിട്ടുന്ന പഴങ്ങളും കിഴങ്ങുവര്‍ഗ്ഗങ്ങളും മാത്രമാണ്. പക്ഷെ അവര്‍ എന്നും കായികവും ധിഷണാപരവും ആയ ഔന്നത്യം വച്ചു പുലര്‍ത്തുന്നതില്‍ ആരുടേയും പിന്നില്‍ ആവുകയില്ല.
നല്ല ജീവിതത്തിന് അടിസ്ഥാനം സന്തോഷവും സംതൃപ്തിയും മാത്രമാണ്.
