Life and its limbs are governed by a strange mixture or logic, faith, reasoning and sometimes lame justification, may be at times blind adulation also. Old religious beliefs said god is running the world with His power of delusion, Maya... if we buy this idea, we have to say all ideas about godhead were tinted with a sense of uncertainty or even one can say, fraud. Yudistira is said to have remarked in yaksha prasnam..."no two books on scriptures, no two arguments, no two sages reach exact agreement on any issue and the dialogue goes on and on. The real truth is hidden in a dark cave..The best way is to follow the path trodden by noble elders". The feeling of hurt to logic(or intelligent reasoning) is highlighted, but we are processing this wonderful logic with an imperfect mind or brain. So it is not only garbage in --garbage out, but also garbage added in between. Every leader of opinion worth his salt has resorted to exploiting the credulousness of the public, be it Krishna, Gandhi, Sankara, Churchill, Rasputin ... or baba or mata. What they achieve in their lifetime stands out and speaks for itself. We cannot judge even whether "Kayamkulam Kochunni" , a robber who looted the rich to help the poor was good or evil. (The westerners may see the shadow of Robin Hood). So the discussion can be nothing but inconclusive.
This blog will contain an assorted mixture of whatever that pours out of my mind and finds expression in words.. I love the beauty of words, I love my friends and above all I love the dark pearl of Dwaraka, the one and only Krishna

The evil people have the knack of making a donkey out of a pedigree horse. If a gentleman is modest, they will call him a dumb idiot. If he is very sincere in his daily life and carriage, he will be called arrogant. If he spoke with people and carried himself in a friendly manner, he will be branded as a thief and timeserver. If he is ruthless in combating evil things in society, his will be called unscrupulous. If he is sincere and imparts valuable knowledge to others with good speech, he will be termed as sick and even mad, with no other work to do. Is he is having some sponatneous magnetic personality, which makes him distinguished from others, then he will be deemed the epitome of fraud, and lack of care and concern for others. If he is a good orator, his name would be a verbose fool.
So the evil and jealous public have their own stock thesaurus to define the actions of the leaders of the society.
True, skepticism at the appearance of new faces in our middle triggers suspicion but the society is expected to find the merits in people and give them a proper pride of place instead of being paranoid. about everything.
This is the view of Bharthruhari of about three hundred millenniums. It is for us to see the relevance of such dicta and follow them or rejects them in toto.

You noble peope, if you embark on the path righteous, as prescribed by the traditons and divine customs, the good deeds by you will make the wicked people into staunch supporters, your enemies will be turned into bosom friends doing your bidding, whatever good you were doing in secrecy will now become public and gain praise, even the worst poison halahalm will trun inno amrutham, In the course of time all evil and negative aspects will turn into positive in your favorur. So do not panick, or disheartende.
The optimaism of a seer poet is apparent here. Let us hope his prophecy comes true.

soothing hands of friendship
na tanmitraṁ yasya kopādbibheti yadvā śaṅkitenorpacaryaṁ|
yasminmitre pitarīvāśvasīta tadvai mitram saṅgatānītarāṇi |35
mahābhārate viduranītivākye adhyāyaḥ 36
Vidura, deals with a wide gamut of issues in his discourse to his elder brother, and in this couplet he talks about the friendship that is true and soothing. " Friendship can be termed as worthwhile only if one need not have to be terrified about the outburst of the anger of the other friend while opening up his heart before the latter, and the friend need not be waited upon with extreme caution for fear of retribution. A friend whom we can approach as if he is our own father, is a true friend. Other friendships are only incidental and of little consequence.
The human life is worth its existence only because of true friendships. No relation between humans can be more intimate and at the same time more sacred that true friendship. No inhibitions should mar the path of friendship. Many alleged friendships are just ad-hoc and when the show of friendship is between a person with some power over his inferior counterpart, such friendships rot into the state of master-servant relation. As a public gesture, the master may call his subordinate a friend but these are mere empty words. Vidura feels that the paternal feeling between friends as ideal. It is true. One need not have any reservations to open up his heart and unload the burden of all his woes before his father...for a father, the son, however good or bad he is, cannot be a burden.
I tend to be personal here.. I am performing my father's twenty fourth sraaddham (death anniversary) today... I know my father was more than a friend, more than everything else, to me.

Even though a person may try to conceal his real motives his body language and behaviour will betray him. This is what Chanakya has said in his aphorisms on human conducts. The great storyteller of Panchatanatram, Vishnu sarma has further elaborated "Through the shape and curves of the body, through gestures, through the gait, through movements of the limbs, through speech, and the subtle movements of the eye and the lips and through changing involuntary emotions, a person would reveal whatever thoughts he is trying to conceal from others.
Our own body and limbs are often treacherous. Maybe due to social compulsions or due to the shame involved, we may try often to conceal the true thoughts arising in our mind. We may apply the throttle of self control and try to show a blank face. But self control is a fleeting phenomenon. Within a short time the shape and manners of the body, the stealthy walk, talk and speech will betray our hidden agenda . A well experienced person does not require any lie detector to divine this. We see this happening especially in children who want to conceal small things from parents, spouses while dealing with petty matters in day to day affairs, lovers, especially young and fresh when they are exposed to company in public gaze, thieves, government officials taking bribe...etc..the list can be quite long. It is the law of nature..If the innards are rotting the shine of the skin will gradually fade and the stink will come out.

na jīrṇadevāyatane na valmīke kadācana

The great Chanakya, while giving rules for human conduct, has stated.."One should not urinate in water."
Manu has also opined " One should not pass urine in a thoroughfare, not
on the ashes, not in the shed where the cow is kept, not in the arable
land which is ploughed and kept ready for sowing, not in water, not on
the remnants of a funeral pyre and not on the pristine natural environs
like a mountain.
It would indeed look funny why such masters
advice us where not to unrinate.. We have to remember that our excretory
fluids can cause very damaging pollution and where other people also
move, contact with such excreta can affect their health. The sages were
aware of the ill effects millenia ago, when many people elsewere were
just leading the life of a half-animal. Water, especially in public
reservoirs are the common community property and any attempt to pollute
it cannot be tolerated. Similary the public roads. One of the most
revered and prized possessions of ancient Indian was his cow and it is
essential that the cow is housed in the most hygienic environs. The land
ready for cultivation also is of similar importance. Nobody should
attempt to pass urine over ashes. Now we now that the reaction between
the bio contents of urine and the alkali in the ashes can generate
effluent gases like ammonia and some cases even more toxic gases like
carbon monoxide or even phosgene. No man with any sense will ever try to
desecrate the memory of a departed soul by urinating on the pyre. The
tall mountains are havens of purity of nature. If the people who visit
the mountain contaminate the atmosphere with dirty things, even the last
hope of pollution free life is lost. Manu has also decreed that one
should not urinate in the precincts of even an abandoned temple, and
also on anthill. Of course, a person trying to urinate over a colony of
ants or termites will learn his lesson for life even without these
rules.
The sages were conscious of proper upkeep of environment. We
claim ourselves civilized today but almost anywhere in the world we can
find people depositing their waste in any or all of the above places..
If there is any doubt about this it will be
enough to clear it if one takes a round in the streets or places of public importance around any town or village.

This is a gem from the master statesman Chaanakya
"A person whose annihilation is imminent will not listen to wise counsel.
If one sees a person who is not able to catch the smell coming from the wick of a lamp which is going to be put off because it has run out of oil, a person who does not care to listen to the advice of his friends and who is not able to see the star Arundathi, he can safely infer that such person's good life has already come to an end."
When a person's fortunes are in the downward trend, his faculties to sense further danger gets depleted. It is essential that he should be patient enough to listen and act according to the wiser counsel. But at this stage of life he becomes brash and even callous about such advice.
When an oil-lamp is running out of oil, the wick gets burned up badly and gives a pungent smell. If we smell the trouble and replenish the lamp with oil, we are safe. Similarly if we listen to the advise of our dear friends even if such counsel may not be palatable, we are again in the safe path. Arundathi star represents the consort of Vasishta, one of the seven great sages (saptharshi..the starry constellation representing the seven sages and the ( star Arundathi (a double to vasishta) is also visible in the sky--the big dipper asterism )...She represents motherhood, chastity and absolute fidelity to the husband. It is a custom in India that immediately after marriage newlyweds look up in the sky to see that star..Seeing Arundathi symbolically signifies the vow of mutual fidelity. And the stars are seen in the heaven when the sky is not turbid. If a person has become incapable of seeing this star, it would mean that he has lost all that is good in life and his end is near.

(Hindu marriage ceremony has a event where bridegroom shows Arundhati to his wife. Arundhati is one of the double star. It is attached to the star Vasishtha. Double Stars (visual binaries) are two stars that move around together gravitationally bound to each other. Star Vasishtha is more than 10 times brighter than the star Arundhati and it is harder to differentiate Arundhati from Vasishtha. Like this double Star, the couple are expected to be together for ever.)

is it worth the penny?
अफलानि दुरन्तानि समव्ययफलानि च।
अशक्यानि च वस्तूनि नारभेत विचक्षणः॥
बल्ललादेवस्य भोजप्रभन्धात्
aphalāni durantāni samavyayaphalāni ca|
aśakyāni ca vastūni nārabheta vicakṣaṇaḥ||
ballalādevasya bhojaprabhandhāt
A person with good sense should never embark on a mission (1) which is not likely to yield the expected result (2) the result of which is not capable of reasonable evaluation
(3) which in the final analysis would only result in just balancing the labour involved and the moderate result
(the attempt and result just breaking even) and (4) which is in the first place incapable of achievement.
The statement may seem too commonplace and the first reaction would be that it is too obvious and does not require any poetic endorsement. But if we are honest to ourselves, we would find that most of us do not act in the manner envisaged here. Most of us take the decision to proceed with a thing in the first flush of enthusiasm, caring least about the positive result..
True, we may not have a very elaborate road-map with all the details when we take the first step. But realism should govern our actions. It is meaningless to perform an action which in the final analysis would have taken its toll, and the end result does not carry us even an inch ahead.
And we have with us the politicians who promise to deliver to us our doorstep the moon and the rainbow all at one time and the funny thing is that we believe them invariably.
